Day 1. AUCKLAND - KAURI MUSEUM AND FORESTS - BAY OF ISLANDS. (L)
Depart Auckland 7.30am. Drive north over the harbour Bridge and along the Hibiscus Coast to the Otamatea Kauri and Early Settlers Museum, one of the best little museums in New Zealand. Learn of the importance of the kauri tree to the development of Northland and see the lifestyle of the early settlers.

Continue through Ruawai 'kumara capital' of New Zealand, and Dargaville into the Waipoua kauri forest. Visit "Tane Mahuta" giant kauri tree - some 2000 years old. Enjoy the views of the Hokianga Harbour and sand dunes and our included fish, chips, and salad lunch before driving across New Zealand and arriving in the Bay of Islands.

Visit the Waitangi Treaty House where the Treaty of Waitangi between Maori and the British Government was signed in 1840. Enjoy a tour with a local guide of the Treaty House and Meeting House with its fabulous carvings, and see the giant war canoe and Waitangi Museum. Accommodation and breakfast for 2 nights in Paihia.

Please note: as travel to Cape Reinga is by special coach your driver/guide will usually return to Auckland tonight.

Day 2. CAPE REINGA (BL)
You will be picked up by special coach for a full day excursion north through the Puketi forest plus the beautiful Mangonui Harbour and Coopers Beach to Cape Reinga at the top of New Zealand.

Travel part way on the sands of Ninety Mile Beach. See the meeting of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. Return to the Bay of Islands early evening. Lunch is included today.

FLY/ROAD TO CAPE REINGA: For a shorter day, a bigger experience, and fabulous scenery not seen from the ground transfer from your hotel to Kerikeri airport and fly north over Ninety Mile beach to land near Cape Reinga. Your special vehicle will be waiting for a 2.5 hour (approx) land tour to Te Paki stream and masive sand dunes on Ninety Mile beach, Cape Reinga light house, Tapotupotu Bay. Fly back to Keri Keri via the fabulous coastal scenery of Parengarenga Harbour, Great Exhibition Bay, Houhora Harbour, Karikari Peninsula, Whangaroa Harbour, Cavalli Islands and Bay of Islands. Return to Kerikeri airport and transfer back to you hotel. Departs twice daily in summer, once daily in winter - extra cost instead of coach $350 per adult. Total time from Paihia approximately 5 hours

Day 3. BAY OF ISLANDS - AUCKLAND (BL)
Morning cruise around the Bay of Islands and through the ‘Hole in the Rock’ - weather permitting.

Cruise past the islands and into secluded bays and stopover at Urupukapuka Island for a barbecue buffet lunch and time to explore the island. Often dolphins are to be seen during the cruise. Disembark at historic Russell for a tour of the town including Flagstaff Hill and the oldest church in New Zealand. Return to Auckland mid evening.
Tour of Russell and return to Auckland may be with another operator.

STAY LONGER.
We do recommend an extra night or two in the Bay of Islands to enjoy all that it has to offer. This will provide a more relaxed time in Russell and gives you the option of taking the historic 'Cream cruise', R Tucker Thomson tall ship cruise, and/or swim with the dolphins cruise either instead of, or as well as the most popular Cape Brett cruise we include. Return to Auckland will normally by scheduled coach from Paihia wharf terminating in Downtown Auckland.

Itinerary

Day 1. Monday. AUCKLAND- KAURI MUSEUM AND FOREST - DARGAVILLE - KAI-IWI LAKES - WAIPOUA FOREST - HOKIANGA.
8.00am. Depart Auckland. Drive north over the Harbour Bridge to the Otamatea Kauri and Early Settlers Museum, one of the best little museums in New Zealand. Learn of the importance of the kauri tree to the development of Northland and see the lifestyle of the early settlers. We have about 3 hours here including lunch break at the excellent cafe (lunch own expense). Continue through Ruawai "Kumara Capital of New Zealand" to Dargaville. Visit the excellent museum, home of the Rainbow Warrior masts. Visit the Kai-iwi lakes before arriving in the Waipoua kauri forest. Venture into the forest to see the "Four Sisters", "Tane Ngahere" and giant"Tane Mahuta" kauri tree - some 2,000 years old. Enjoy the views of the Hokianga Harbour and sand dunes and the statue of Opo the dolphin. Accommodation tonight at the Copthorne Hotel on the shores of the Hokianga Harbour. Optional evening hike to the Hokianga Harbour Heads for spectacular views.

Day 2. Tuesday. HOKIANGA - RAWENE - WAIMATE NORTH - KERI KERI - WAITANGI(B).
Visit historic Rawene and see Clendon House (exterior only) built in the 1860's. Also learn of Baron Du Thierry and his misguided plans for the area!. Continue to historic Mangungu Mission Station in a picturesque site overlooking the Hokianga Harbour built in 1839 and the site of the 3rd largest signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on the 12th February, 1840. Continue to Te Waimate Mission Station established as a model farm by the Missionaries in 1834 and where Charles Darwin enjoyed Christmas with the Missionaries in 1835. It was also the scene of the 2nd signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on the 10th February 1840.On through the citrus orchards of Keri Keri to visit the Stone Store which opened for business in 1836 and is still trading. Enjoy a tour of Kemp House bult in 1822 and the oldest building in New Zealand before visiting the Haruru Falls with the option for a walk among the mangroves to Waitangi if you wish. Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds for a tour of the Treaty House, scintillating Maori cultural performance, see the great war canoe, and enjoy an hour in the excellent Treaty Museum opened in 2016 and video presentations portraying the events of 4-6 February, 1840. Accommodation for 3 nights at Copthorne Bay of Islands at Waitangi.

Optional relaxing evening dinner cruise up the Waitangi River to the Haruru Falls and return - extra cost $98.

Day 3. Wednesday. CAPE REINGA EXCURSION (BL)
Depart at 7.15am by special bus for Cape Reinga at the top of New Zealand travelling part way on the sands of Ninety Mile Beach. See the meeting of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean and some of the beautiful beaches. Lunch included today. Enjoy the drive down the beautiful East Coast passing Doubtless Bay, Coopers Beach, Mangonui on the beautiful Whangaroa Harbour returning to Paihia early evening.

Day 4. Thursday. BAY OF ISLANDS (BL)
Enjoy a cruise around the Bay of Islands and through the 'Hole in the Rock - weather permitting. Cruise past the islands and into secluded bays and stopover at Urupukapuka Island for a barbecue lunch and time to explore the island. Often Dolphins are to be seen during the cruise. Disembark at historic Russell, first permanent European settlement in New Zealand, for a tour of the town, including Flagstaff Hill, the oldest church in New Zealand, and enjoy a guided tour of Pompallier House Catholic Mission station built in 1842 including a 'hands on' introduction to tanning leather and bookmaking as done by the Catholic brothers 170 years ago.

Day 5. Friday. BAY OF ISLANDS - AUCKLAND (B)
Return to Auckland via Kawakawa with a visit to the famed Hundertwasser toilets and the Heritage Railway station opened in 1884. We take a ride to Taumarere on the Bay of Islands Vintage railway, diesel hauled apart from school and public holidays when it will be steam hauled. Explore the Kawiti glowworm and limestone caves and visit the site of the Ruapekapeka Pa, scene of a major batle in 1846, and the town basin at Whangarei with admission to Claphams Clocks included. Return to Auckland about 6pm.
