Day 1. AUCKLAND - KAURI MUSEUM AND FORESTS - BAY OF ISLANDS. (L)
Depart Auckland 7.30am. Drive north over the harbour Bridge and along the Hibiscus Coast to the Otamatea Kauri and Early Settlers Museum, one of the best little museums in New Zealand. Learn of the importance of the kauri tree to the development of Northland and see the lifestyle of the early settlers.

Continue through Ruawai 'kumara capital' of New Zealand, and Dargaville into the Waipoua kauri forest. Visit "Tane Mahuta" giant kauri tree - some 2000 years old. Enjoy the views of the Hokianga Harbour and sand dunes and our included fish, chips, and salad lunch before driving across New Zealand and arriving in the Bay of Islands.

Visit the Waitangi Treaty House where the Treaty of Waitangi between Maori and the British Government was signed in 1840. Enjoy a tour with a local guide of the Treaty House and Meeting House with its fabulous carvings, and see the giant war canoe. Accommodation and breakfast for 2 nights in Paihia.

Please note: as travel to Cape Reinga is by special coach your driver/guide will usually return to Auckland tonight and meet you again on completion of your cruise on wednesday after picking up your baggage.

Day 2. CAPE REINGA (BL)
You will be picked up by special coach for a full day excursion north through historic Keri Keri and the Puketi forest plus the beautiful Mangonui Harbour and Coopers Beach to Cape Reinga at the top of New Zealand.

Travel part way on the sands of Ninety Mile Beach. See the meeting of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. Return to the Bay of Islands early evening. Lunch is included today.

FLY/ROAD TO CAPE REINGA: For a shorter day, a bigger experience, and fabulous scenery not seen from the ground transfer from your hotel to Kerikeri airport and fly north over Ninety Mile beach to land near Cape Reinga. Your special vehicle will be waiting for a 2.5 hour (approx) land tour to Te Paki stream and masive sand dunes on Ninety Mile beach, Cape Reinga light house, Tapotupotu Bay. Fly back to Keri Keri via the fabulous coastal scenery of Parengarenga Harbour, Great Exhibition Bay, Houhora Harbour, Karikari Peninsula, Whangaroa Harbour, Cavalli Islands and Bay of Islands. Return to Kerikeri airport and transfer back to you hotel. Departs twice daily in summer, once daily in winter - extra cost instead of coach $340 per adult. Total time from Paihia approximately 5 hours

Day 3. BAY OF ISLANDS - AUCKLAND (B)
Morning cruise around the Bay of Islands and through the ‘Hole in the Rock’ - weather permitting.

Cruise past the islands and into secluded bays and stopover at Urupukapuka Island. Often dolphins are to be seen during the cruise. Disembark at historic Russell for a tour of the town including Flagstaff Hill and the oldest church in New Zealand. Return to Auckland mid evening.
Tour of Russell and return to Auckland may be with another operator.

STAY LONGER.
We do recommend an extra night or two in the Bay of Islands to enjoy all that it has to offer. This will provide a more relaxed time in Russell and gives you the option of taking the historic 'Cream cruise', R Tucker Thomson tall ship cruise, and/or swim with the dolphins cruise either instead of, or as well as the most popular Cape Brett cruise we include. Return to Auckland will normally by scheduled coach from Paihia wharf terminating in Downtown Auckland.

Itinerary

Day 1. Monday. AUCKLAND- KAURI MUSEUM AND FOREST - DARGAVILLE - KAI-IWI LAKES - WAIPOUA FOREST - HOKIANGA. (L)
7.30am. Depart Auckland. Drive north over the Harbour Bridge to the Otamatea Kauri and Early Settlers Museum, one of the best little museums in New Zealand. Lunch included in Dargaville. Learn of the importance of the kauri tree to the development of Northland and see the lifestyle of the early settlers. Continue through Ruawai "Kumara Capital of New Zealand" to Dargaville. Visit the excellent museum, home of the Rainbow Warrior masts, and the Kai-iwi lakes before arriving in the Waipoua kauri forest. Visit the forest park information centre and "Tane Mahuta" giant kauri tree - some 2,000 years old.Enjoy the views of the Hokianga Harbour and sand dunes before arriving at the Copthorne Hotel on the shores of the Hokianga Harbour.
Optional evening twilight forest encounter with a local maori guide exploring the forest and visiting the Four sisters, Te Matua Ngahere, and experience the forest in the night - extra cost $80.

Day 2. Tuesday. HOKIANGA - KAITAIA. (B).
Free time to relax with an optional walk to the Hokianga Harbour heads. Visit the Koutu Boulders on the beach (Northlands answer to the South Island's Moeraki Boulders) and explore the unique Wairere Boulders and valley. Visit the Mangunu Mission Station built in 1839 and scene of the third and largest signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, historic Rawene (including the exterior of Clendon House) and take the ferry across the Hokianga Harbour to Kohu Kohu. Time to explore this Victorian town before we continue north to Kaitaia. Visit the new Te Ahu centre and museum presenting the Maori and Dalmation heritage of the area. Also explore the Gumdiggers Park and buried forest including the 1890's gumfield and village and the Gecko House, Accommodation at Orana Motor Inn or similar.

Day 3. Wednesday. CAPE REINGA - PAIHIA (BL)
Enjoy a relaxed excursion with a local operator by special bus to Cape Reinga at the top of New Zealand travelling part way on the sands of Ninety Mile Beach. See the meeting of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean and some of the beautiful beaches. Picnic lunch included today. Enjoy the drive down the beautiful East Coast passing Doubtless Bay, Coopers Beach, Mangonui on the beautiful Whangaroa Harbour. Arrive Paihia early evening for 2 nights accommodation in Paihia.

Day 4. Thursday. BAY OF ISLANDS (BD)
Enjoy a cruise around the Bay of Islands and through the 'Hole in the Rock - weather permitting. Cruise past the islands and into secluded bays and stopover at Urupukapuka Island. Often Dolphins are to be seen during the cruise. Disembark at historic Russell, first permanent European settlement in New Zealand, for a tour of the town, including Flagstaff Hill, the oldest church in New Zealand, and enjoy a guided tour of Pompallier House Catholic Mission station built in 1842 including a 'hands on' introduction to tanning leather and bookmaking as done by the Catholic brothers 170 years ago. Return by ferry to Paihia and enjoy a guided tour of the Waitangi Treaty House and grounds and see the great War canoe.

Day 5. Friday. BAY OF ISLANDS - AUCKLAND (B)
Visit the Haruru Falls and Waimate Mission station (exterior only) built in 1831-32 where the misisonaries established a model farm and Charles Darwin enjoyed christmas. Continue to Keri Keri to visit Kemp House built in 1821, oldest building in New Zealand, and the Stone Store built in 1834.
Return to Auckland via Kawakawa with a visit to the famed Hunterwasser toilets and the Heritage Railway station opened in 1884. We take a ride to Taumarere on the Bay of Islands Vintage railway, diesel hauled apart from school and public holidays when it will be steam hauled. Explore the Kawiti glowworm and limestone caves and visit the site of the Ruapekapeka Pa, scene of a major batle in 1846, and the town basin at Whangarei with admission to Claphams Clocks included. Return to Auckland about 7.30pm.
