Stage One - Walking. $70 per adult (including Skytower admission)
8.30am. Meet your experienced and passionate local guide at the base of Skytower (328 metres high) in Federal Street and ascend 220 metres to the upper observation deck for a panoramic 360 degree view of the city and harbours, and Hauraki Gulf, while your guide introduces you to the layout and volcanic history of the city. Descend for your walking tour to discover the history of Auckland city.Pass the Civic Theatre (1929), Aotea square, Town Hall (1910), and cross Queen Street which used to be the Waihorotiu Stream providing water for the early Briish settlers in 1840. Continue into Albert Park, originally site of a Maori Pa, and now a vibrant display of flowers and manicured lawn. The area was fortified by Sir George Grey (2nd Governor of New Zealand). Enter the University of Auckland grounds past the clocktower (1926) and see part of the Albert Army Barracks (1846), and old Government House (1856). Also see some of the original merchants houses built from 1878 and the first synagogue (1884). Stage one ends at the Art gallery for an introduction to New Zealand art and a special exhibition of Lindauer (one of New Zealand's most famous artists) portraits of Maori and European people. (Lindauer exhibition ends 19 February, 2017). Stage one ends at the Art Gallery at 11am.

Stage Two - driving $50 per adult. $30 per child age 5 - 14.
11am. Stage Two starts from the Art Gallery.
Pass the High Court and drive to the Domain. See the Band Rotunda and photostop the exterior of the Museum, Cathedral Church of St Mary (1882),Holy Trinity Cathedral and Selwyn Court. Stop to smell the roses in the Parnell Rose Gardens (October to April) before descending to the waterfront passing the Container terminal, and Mechanics Bay from where flying boats left for Sydney and the Pacific Islands from 1940 to 1960. Continue along Tamaki Drive, a blaze of red from mid December to mid January as our Pohutukawa trees bloom, to beautiful Mission Bay. See the Melanesian Mission (1859) and enjoy some beach time with panoramic views of Rangitoto Island, our most recently erupting volcano (about 600 years ago). Visit the Memorial to Michael Joseph Savage (1873-1940 and one of our most popular Prime Ministers) before passing Okahu Bay, once principal village of the Ngati Whatua Maori tribe. Continue through the central city along the original shoreline to the base of the Harbour Bridge and explore the Wynyard Quarter and Viaduct Harbour before the tour ends at the Maritime Museum (admission not included) about 12.30pm.

Your guide will escort you through the 10 acre Hobbiton site. See the Green Dragon Inn, The Mill and other structures and see how this Waikato farmland was transformed into The Shire from Middle Earth. Also enjoy a drive through the picturesque 1,250 acre sheep and cattle farm. Enjoy a festive feast at the Green Dragon Inn party marquee before continuing to Rotorua. Depart Auckland 7.30am. Drive north over the harbour Bridge and along the Hibiscus Coast to the Otamatea Kauri and Early Settlers Museum, one of the best little museums in New Zealand. Learn of the importance of the kauri tree to the development of Northland and see the lifestyle of the early settlers.
Continue through Ruawai 'kumara capital' of New Zealand, and Dargaville into the Waipoua kauri forest. Visit "Tane Mahuta" giant kauri tree - some 2000 years old. Enjoy our included fish, chips, and salad lunch (vegetarian options available) overlooking the Hokianga Harbour and sand dunes before arriving in the Bay of Islands.
Visit the Waitangi Treaty House where the Treaty of Waitangi between Maori and the British Government was signed in 1840. Enjoy a tour with a local guide and see the giant war canoe. Return to Auckland mid evening.

Drive south over the Bombay Hills and across the Hauraki Plains to the old gold mining city of Thames. Visit a bird hide on the coast and take a coffee break. Continue along the Pohutukawa Coast to the town of Coromandel for lunch before enjoying the unique Driving Creek Railway built by local potter and rail enthusiast, Barry Brickell. Ride the train through regenerating native forest up the hills to ther "Eyefull Tower" for a panoramic view over the Peninsula and Hauraki Gulf. After returning to base and visiting the pottery we drive across the Peninsula to the charming seaside resort of Whitianga. Continue to Cathedral Cove (1.5 hours walk - a reasonable level of fitness and good shoes are required)) and Hotwater Beach where for 2 hours either side of low tide you can dig your own thermal bath in the sand!
